If you are ready to make a salad, salsa or sauce within a day or two, the most important thing is to pick a ripe tomato. Look for a vibrant color, as well as one that is plump and firm. The tomato should be free of wrinkles.

For your tomatoes to last, do not refrigerate them. Keep them at room temperature. If you bought tomatoes that were not ripe and want to speed the process up, you can place the tomato in a paper bag with an apple. The apple emits ethylene gas which helps the tomato ripen faster.

So many times I find myself struggling to figure out what to make for dinner and many times I am standing in the grocery store still clueless as to what to make. My new solution is downloading many of the free food apps that are available on the iphone. This has been a big time saver for me – I just keep looking through the different apps till we find something we want to make !

Here are a few of our favorite iphone food apps

1. Allrecipes Dinner Spinner – Recipes, Drinks, and more! Free
Each recipe has a picture, average cooking time and other essential information to help. Just made a great mexican bean pie recipe from this app yesterday !

2. Martha Stewart’s EveryDay Food $.99
Great images of the recipes and I love the combination of ingredients she chooses.

3. Women’s Day Cooking Assistant FREE
They have some great low calorie recipes and a yummy assortment of salads – not to mention their variety of great summer recipes.

4. 170,000 Recipes and Grocery – Big Oven FREE
Shows some really unique recipes – great for when you want to mix it up a little.

5. TODAY Show Recipes Free
I don’t always get to watch the today show but I love that I can still see all the recipes they have made that day – there is even video of certain recipes.

6. The Betty Crocker Mobile Cookbook Free
Not just cake recipes. I love the browse by ingredient search. There are even coupons in this app!

7. Epicurious Recipes and Shopping List FREE
I’ll be honest I don’t use this one very often only because the recipes catered more towards the adult palate and there was not way my kids were going to eat most of these recipes.

8. Healthy Recipes – By SparkRecipes FREE
We just started using this one -the search function seems to be a little off but maybe they will fix it.

Others that have gotten good reviews:

Rachael Ray’s Tasty Bites $1.99 – seems to have gotten good reviews

Weber’s On the Grill $4.99 – also get reviewed quite a bit

How to Cook Everything $4.99 – includes 2,000 recipes

Although these recipes may not be low in fat, it does show how menu planning can save you time and money. I have seen people over spend time and time again when they show up at the grocery store without a shopping list or an idea of the meals they want to prepare that week. If you are watching calories, substitute items such as buying a whole wheat pizza crust or low fat cheee. The point is to plan ahead!
