The Quick fire challenge was to take make something with potato as the featured ingredient.  The winner was Jennifer Carol. She is definitely the most talented of the female chefs.

For the elimination challenge, the remaining contestants try to serve the 300 pilots and crew from the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron based at Nellis Air Force Base with the same Pride, Precision and Professionalism on deck that the Thunderbirds show in the air.  They were all to work as a team, but were not given an idea of what ingredients or cooking conditions they would have until they arrived at the base. Back at the house, the chefs chose Jennifer to lead the team since she had immunity, while the rest split up in groups of two to cook separate dishes.  Once they arrived in the kitchen, they saw canned items and vegetables, but no stoves and no individual pans, just over sized woks and kettles. The guest judge was Colonel Mark Peel.

Greek salad, pasta salad, three bean chili with roasted chicken, braised pork shoulder with potato salad, roasted beef strip loin and chocolate bread pudding with peanut butter sauce were some of the dishes served.

Michael Voltaggio won the challenge.   Michael Isabella was brought down a notch by being in the bottom three for his bland shrimp salad, and did not take the criticism well from the judges.  In the end, Preeti was eliminated, as the judges were unimpressed by the pasta salad she and her partner Laurine prepared.

Top Chef Battles of the Sexes…teams were divided men against woman, and asked to prepare appetizers that matched “shots” for a bachelor/bachelorette party.  The competition was close, but the men’s team pulled out the win. Todd English was the guest judge.  Eve Aronoff, who was also in the bottom three chefs last week was eliminated.

Last night was the season premier of Top Chef Season 6, Las Vegas on BravoTV.  Seventeen new “cheftestants” compete to win the title of Top Chef and $100,000.

One thing that stood out immediately, is that there seemed to be much more experienced chefs among these contestants than in previous seasons. Also never featured a family rivalry…two talented brothers Bryan and Michael Voltaggio will battle for the title.

The quick fire challenge placed contestants in groups for a relay race that involved shucking 16 clams, peeling 30 prawns, cleaning 5 lobsters and butchering two chop for prime rib.

For the elimination challenge, contestants have to choose a personal vice and cook to express their bad habits through food. Of course many had similar vices of alcohol or smoking. Wolfgang Puck appeared as a guest judge.  The winner was Kevin Gillspie for his Arctic Char with Salsa Verde of Turnips. I personally thought that Michael Voltaggio’s vice of voluptuous women, was brought out creatively through his “rack” of lamb and coconut sauce, as well as the alcohol vice brought out in Jennifer Carroll’s dish, poached halibut with whiskey, bouron and scotch sauce.

If you love to cook, this is the show for you, as I have to say out of all the shows, this is where I have learned the most.

EMERIL GREEN CALIFORNIA SPECIAL AND ORIGINAL EPISODES

Emeril Green California Specials (wt) will take viewers to one of the country’s most progressive and dedicated organic and sustainable farming areas – Sonoma and Napa Valleys. At the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley, see a school leading the way with its commitment to local ingredients and sustainable farming practices. New students arrive each semester to study the art of food preparation, and wine education; with the land so rich in ingredients, they quickly come to realize the importance of knowing where their food has been grown. While the school may provide the canvas for these culinary artists in training, the local farms and food purveyors supply the materials. Follow a few students and teachers as they mix it up with Chef Emeril to create a local, seasonal menu from ingredients all from within a 150 miles radius. Beginning in October, Chef Emeril’s tour of wine country will include:

• visiting a farm that uses solar power and biodiesel fuels for all its energy needs;
• learning more about sustainable fishing and water conservation practices;

WORST COOKS IN AMERICA Premieres: January 2010
Chefs Anne Burrell and Beau MacMillan each take on a team of six hopeless home cooks and try to transform them from kitchen zeros into kitchen heroes in only 10 days. Viewers will follow 12 “recruits” as they face a series of high-pressure culinary challenges to help triumph over their inability to cook.

ULTIMATE RECIPE SHOWDOWN Premieres: 2nd Quarter 2010
Coming to 3rd season, the show put everyday cooks in a battle to earn the title with their best recipe. Hosted by Guy Fieri, the show seeks who possesses the “ultimate” recipe, be it new or an inherited one.

THE NEXT FOOD NETWORK STAR SEASON 6 Premieres: June 2010
10 hopeful chefs compete for the biggest prize on television. The sixth season will once again see one winner taking in a contract for his or her own Food Network show. Iron Chef Bobby Flay leads the selection committee to judge on their ability and on-screen potential.

The Next Food Network Star Season 5 premiered on June 7th.  Some of this is old news for those of you that have been following the show, but our blog is new as well, and we want to talk about one of our favorite cooking competitions.

Not only is the grand prize an amazing opportunity…a chance to star in their own tv show on the Food Network, but along the way, the contestants compete for featured recipes in Good Housekeeping, Esquire and other popular publications. Even those that don’t win, the longer they appear on the show and can win challenges, the better opportunity to publish cook books and other ventures. The past two season have left fans split in whether or not the best contestant won. Will this season be the same?

This season introduced the following 10 finalists: Brett August from Washington Heights, New York; Katie Cavuto from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania;, Melissa d’Arabian from Keller, Texas; Teddy Folkman from Alexandria, Virginia; Eddie Gilbert from Manhattan Beach, California; Jen Isham from Orlando, Florida; Debbie Lee from West Hollywood, California; Jamika Pessoa from Atlanta, Georgia; Michael Proietti from New York, New York; and Jeffrey Saad from Los Angeles, California.

The challenges this season will include catering a party for a roomful of Food Network stars, impressing the “Barefoot Contessa” herself in the Hamptons, and preparing a comforting meal for returning soldiers on the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum.  Down the line, The Next Food Network Star will also fly to Miami for the first time where the finalists must survive a beachside wood-grilling challenge for Red Lobster and create a delicious dinner a movie screening.

“A whole career is at stake,” Food Network star Bobby Flay said. “It’s like Disney World. There are so many things now that revolve around food.”

Guy Fieri has been the most successful winner of the Next Food Network Star (Season 2,) with shows including Guy’s Big Bite, Diners Drive-Ins & Dives, Ultimate Recipe Showdown, and the most recent  Guy Off the Hook.

The shows airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. Check back Monday morning at 9am/8c for all the behind-the-scenes action from Sunday’s dramatic episodes.
